How We Teach & Help Your Child Succeed

At Horizon, our teachers use active learning approaches that build engagement, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. In our classrooms, students regularly work in pairs and groups, sharing ideas and learning together.

Every lesson is carefully designed to capture attention, present learning clearly, challenge students to think deeply, check understanding throughout the process and consolidate learning. Teachers adapt it to meet individual needs, helping every child make strong progress and build confidence.

We work closely with parents through regular communication, access to our Learning Management System, home visits, student-led conferences, and termly reports, ensuring families stay connected to their child’s learning journey.

Assessment for Growth and Success
We believe assessment should support learning, build confidence, and help every child reach their potential. At our school, assessment is used not only to measure achievement, but to guide teaching, celebrate progress, and identify the next steps for each learner.

Ongoing Formative Assessment
Our teachers use regular formative assessment throughout lessons to understand where students are in their learning. Through questioning, observation, discussion, classwork, and feedback, teachers gain valuable insight into each child’s progress and adapt instruction to meet students’ needs.
This continuous approach helps ensure learning is responsive, personalised, and focused on steady growth.

Summative Assessment
Students also complete summative assessments at key points during the year to reflect on what they have learned and how they can continue to improve.

Summative assessments support meaningful reflection for both teachers and students, helping to recognise achievement and plan future learning goals.

Standardised Assessments
To benchmark progress and maintain high academic standards, students complete a range of internationally recognised assessments.

Phonics Assessments
At the end of Grade 1 and Grade 2, students complete standardised phonics assessments. These help measure reading accuracy, decoding skills, fluency, and early literacy development.

Cambridge Progression Tests
Grades 3-5 students complete Cambridge Progression Tests each year. These internationally benchmarked assessment helps measure attainment in core subjects and track progress against Cambridge standards.

Checkpoint Tests
At the end of Grade 5, students complete Cambridge Checkpoint tests. These provide an internationally recognised measure of student achievement and readiness for the next stage of learning.
